When to Have an Eye Exam
Before we delve into the types of eye and vision exams we offer, let's find out who needs to have an eye exam.
- Children 3 and Younger: Children who are 3 years old and younger will have their eyes checked during their appointment with a pediatrician. If they suspect there is an issue, the child will be referred to an optometrist for a more in-depth eye exam. During this time, they check your child's eyes for common eye and vision issues such as lazy eye, crossed eyes, or eyes that are otherwise misaligned.
- Children Ages 3-5: Between the ages and 3 and 5, children may continue to have their eyes checked by the pediatrician. However, the child may be sent to an optometrist for a more comprehensive eye exam.
- School-Age Children and Adolescents: All children must have their eyes checked before they are enrolled in school. If your child does not have any vision issues or a family history of vision issues, they will then be expected to have their vision checked every 1 to 2 years. Other than that, the child will need to have their vision checked based on their doctor's recommendations.
