LASIK Candidates

Before you can undergo LASIK surgery, you need to receive a comprehensive eye exam. We will also need to see some of your previous eye exams to see if there have been any changes over the years. There are several criteria that you must meet before you can be considered a good candidate for this procedure. Above all else, your eyes have to be healthy for you to be eligible. You must not have eyes that itch or burn or have conditions like dry eye or conjunctivitis. Previous eye injuries can also keep you from having this eye surgery.

Eye Criteria

Your cornea has to be thick enough. LASIK works by reshaping the front surface of your eye, called the cornea. If you have a cornea that is irregular in some way, such as misshapen or too thin, you may not be a good candidate for this surgery. You also need a prescription that is not too strong and that does not change often. The eye surgeon will want to see that you do not need a stronger prescription every year and that you do not have a strong prescription strength. When a prescription is very strong, your eye may need so much reshaping that it would adversely affect your eyes.
