Vision Exam FAQs

We understand that seeing clearly and comfortably is essential for performing tasks and enjoying activities with ease and confidence. That's why keeping regular appointments for a vision exam is an essential tool for maintaining eye health. Here are some frequently asked questions about vision exams to help patients gain a greater understanding of their benefits.

Eyes Exam

Why is a routine vision exam so important?

Changes in your vision happen in small increments that typically can only be detected in our optometry office, and your prescription needs to be kept up to date. Dangerous eye conditions develop gradually, but their symptoms are often too subtle for the patient to notice until damage to his or her vision has already occurred.  Catching any of these concerns and addressing them early on is the best option for responsible eye care.

Do I need a vision exam if my prescription hasn't changed much?

As we age, our vision changes from year to year, making it necessary for our prescription lenses to also change. Though these changes may seem minor, wearing the wrong lenses for as many hours as we do during an average day can cause frequent headaches, eye strain, and eventually more serious conditions.

What tests are involved in a vision exam?

Besides visual acuity and refraction tests, our optometrist will go through other tests that assess the health of your eyes. Specialized eye drops are used to fully dilate your pupils, letting more light in and giving us a better view of your eye. This helps our optometrist to evaluate the health of the retina, macula, and optic nerve. The tonometry test checks the fluid pressure inside your eye to determine your risk for glaucoma.

How do vision exams help my overall health?

Tests by our optometrist that check for eye illnesses can also reveal warning signs of disease or other issues developing in areas of the body. While examining your eyes for glaucoma, we can also detect signs of hypertension and high cholesterol. Dry eye syndrome and other problems with tear production and glands can be linked to diabetes. Our eye doctor regularly diagnoses diabetes, autoimmune diseases, blood pressure issues, and even cancers.
