What Happens During Your First Eye Exam

AssureVision provides quality eye care in Arlington Heights and Barrington. If it has been a while since your last eye exam or if you have never had an eye exam, contact Dr. Lomazov today to schedule an appointment. For now, let’s take a look at what you can expect during your first eye exam.

Eye Movement

Eye care involves taking a look at the muscles in the eye. The eye doctor will ask you to use your eyes to follow an object as it moves. We are looking for signs that the muscles are weak or not working together.

Glaucoma and Eye Pressure

The glaucoma test is used to examine the level of pressure in the eyes. In some cases, we will use a small tool to touch the surface of the eye. In other cases, a machine will blow a small bit of air at the eye.

Visual Acuity

The visual acuity test involves covering one eye and reading a chart of letters across the room and up close. The goal is to determine the distance at which you can identify the letters.

Refraction Exam

The results of the visual acuity test will determine if you need to receive a refraction exam. The optometrist will bring a large machine to the front of your face. You will press your face up to the machine, which holds a variety of lenses. We will ask you to look through the lenses and tell us which lens works best for improving your vision.

Eye Dilation

The eye doctor may use eye drops to dilate your eyes. This enlarges the pupils so we can see the interior of your eye. Dilation is not uncomfortable itself, but it can make your eyes sensitive to light. For this reason, it is a good idea to bring sunglasses to the eye exam.
