Eye infections are a common health problem that can be caused by a wide range of issues. If your eye or eyes are red, itchy, or swollen, you may have an eye infection. There are three basic types of eye infections based on what causes them. They may be fungal, bacterial, or viral in nature. If you have an eye infection, you need treatment from an optometrist. At AssureVision, Dr. Lomazov provides quality eye care for our patients suffering from eye infections in and around Arlington Heights and Barrington.

Conjunctivitis

Also called pink eye, conjunctivitis is very common. It occurs when the blood vessels located in the thin membrane that lines the eyeballs and eyelids are infected by a virus, bacteria, or fungus. This causes the eye to become inflamed and turn red or pink. You can also get conjunctivitis from allergies as well as chemical exposure. Being exposed to a lot of chlorine can also cause it. When it is caused by a virus or bacteria, it is highly contagious. From the time the infection begins, it is contagious for two weeks. If your eyes have a watery discharge, look red or pink, or you have itchy eyes, it may be conjunctivitis.

Keratitis

This type of eye infection occurs when there is an infection of the cornea. The cornea is a protective layer over the eye that covers the iris and pupil. This can be caused by an eye injury, or it can be caused by an infectious means. These include parasitic, fungal, bacterial, and viral infections. It causes the cornea to swell, and you may have eye redness and swelling. It can be painful and can cause you to have a lot more tears than normal. Some people get blurry vision and have discomfort when opening and closing their eyelids.
